The #A11YJAM game jam May 9 – 15

The #A11YJAM game jam is designed to raise awareness of the accessibility barriers encountered by people with disabilities when playing games and encourage developers to design their games with these potential barriers in mind. Participating developers are asked to adapt and improve a game they have made for a previous game jam to overcome an accessibility barrier and make it playable to people who would otherwise have been excluded. If you’re not sure how your game can be improved the #A11YJAM website has a list of suggestions on possible accessibility features to add.

Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities Webinar: Digital Accessibility the Invisible Civil Rights Challenge of the 21st Century (May 10)

Often organizations may not know where to go or how to get started in making their websites and technologies accessible for people with disabilities. In celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (May 16), the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities will host a webinar May 10, “Digital Accessibility the Invisible Civil Rights Challenge of the 21st Century.” Join us at 2:00 PM for a panel discussion with Sharron Rush of Knowbility, Glenda Sims of Deque, and Michael More of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. These experts will share common examples of accessibility barriers and solutions, training opportunities to learn more about accessibility, accessibility testing/development tools and resources, answer questions, and share best practice examples for bringing organizations into compliance with accessibility laws and standards.

A group of Costa Rican accessibility advocates will join the GAAD with an online event called: “Hablemos A11D, conversaciones sobre accesibilidad web”. Carlos Murillo, Leonardo Segura Peñaranda, Merary Alvarado y Roberto Remedios will have a conversation about the status of web accessibility in Costa Rica via Facebook Video Chat. We will take questions and expand the message looking to increase local level of awareness.
